Bill Walton Dies at 71: A Legacy of Triumph and Tragedy

From UCLA to the NBA

Bill Walton, the Hall of Fame center who won two national titles at UCLA and two NBA championships in Portland and Boston, has died at the age of 71. Walton, who was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 1991, died with his family by his side, NBA spokesperson Mark Broussard said in a statement.

A Brilliant But Injury-Riddled Career

Walton's career was marked by both brilliance and tragedy. He was a dominant force on the court, but his career was often interrupted by injuries. He missed the 1978-79 season with a foot injury, and he played just 14 games the following season before breaking his foot again. Despite his injuries, Walton was able to achieve great success.
